The Ultimate Guide to Disney World's Lightning Lane Multipass and Single Pass

Everything You Need to Know to Maximize the Magic Without the Wait

Let’s be real: waiting in long lines with little ones, grandparents, and a double stroller full of snacks is no one’s idea of fun. That’s why Disney’s Lightning Lane Multipass and Single Pass are game-changers for families looking to make the most of their time (and sanity!) in the parks. Important note: This guide is for Lightning Lanes at Walt Disney World. Disneyland has a slightly different system!

As a Disney travel expert and mom, I’m breaking it all down in this easy-to-follow guide, so you can spend less time waiting and more time riding Dumbo, hugging Mickey, and making magical memories together.

What Are Lightning Lanes?

Lightning Lanes are Disney World’s “skip the standby line” option. Instead of waiting 60+ minutes, you’ll reserve a return window and breeze through a much shorter entrance.

There are now two types of Lightning Lane access:

  • Lightning Lane Multipass – lets you pre-book multiple attractions

  • Lightning Lane Single Pass – allows you to pay separately to pre-book Disney World’s most in-demand rides

Let’s break them down!

Lightning Lane Multipass: The Basics

Lightning Lane Multipass allows you to pre-book up to 3 Lightning Lane experiences per day in a single park, with the option to continue booking more one at a time throughout your day.

When Can You Book?

  • Onsite Disney Resort Hotel guests: Book up to 7 days in advance of your check-in date, for your entire stay

  • Offsite guests: Book up to 3 days in advance

  • Booking opens at 7:00 AM Eastern

How the Multipass Tier System Works

Each park (except Animal Kingdom) has two tiers:

  • Tier 1: Choose one attraction

  • Tier 2: Choose two attractions

Animal Kingdom has no tier system—you can choose any 3 eligible attractions.

Pro Strategy Tip: Use a “Burner Ride” to Book More

You can pre-book three multipass Lightning Lanes. Once you use your first Lightning Lane, that opens up the ability to book a fourth. Want to unlock your 4th Lightning Lane sooner? Use a “burner ride” strategy. This strategy involves scanning in to a Lightning Lane ride as early as possible, so that you unlock subsequent rides. You will ‘waste’ a Lightning Lane on a “burner” ride (a ride you might not actually need a lightning lane for) so that you can unlock subsequent Tier 1 rides.

  1. Select one of your Tier 2 rides to be something with very early return times (ideally within 45 minutes of park opening)

  2. Tap into it as early as possible

  3. The moment you scan in, book your next Lightning Lane!

Great burner rides:

A burner ride should be a short ride, near the park entrance (or nearby the next rides you want to do):

  • Magic Kingdom: Mad Tea Party, Dumbo

  • EPCOT: The Seas with Nemo, Figment

  • Hollywood Studios: Star Tours

  • Animal Kingdom: Dinosaur

Lightning Lane Single Pass: The Basics

Single Pass lets you purchase individual Lightning Lane access to Disney’s most popular rides (not included in Multipass).

Guardians of the Galaxy, a Lightning Lane Single Pass attraction at Epcot.

Current Single Pass Attractions (as of 2025):

  • Magic Kingdom: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, TRON Lightcycle / Run

  • EPCOT: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

  • Hollywood Studios: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

  • Animal Kingdom: Avatar Flight of Passage

When Can You Book?

  • Onsite guests: Book up to 7 days in advance (starting at 7:00 AM Eastern)

  • Offsite guests: Book up to 3 days in advance (also starting at 7:00 AM Eastern)

Pricing: What to Expect

Pricing varies based on crowd levels and demand.

  • Multipass:

    • Starts at $15 per person/day, can rise to $35+ on peak days

    • Includes 3 attractions and rolling access to book more

  • Single Pass:

    • Usually $12–$25 per ride, depending on the ride and date

💡 You don’t need both—pick the option(s) that work best for your family and your must-do rides!

Are Lightning Lane Multipass and Single Pass Worth it?

To that, I say, it’s all personal preference - what your tolerance for waiting in lines, and how much are you willing to pay to avoid waiting in lines? For me, I say that Lightning Lanes (both Multipass and Single Pass) are ALWAYS worth it! If I’m going to Disney with my kids, I would never NOT buy Lightning Lanes. When I visit with my travel agent friends, we don’t always buy them. But I think Lightning Lanes are a very good use of your money, and I would recommend saving in other ways in order to fit Lightning Lanes into your budget.

Also, you can purchase Multipass and Single Passes for only certain parks. Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are the two parks where they are most critical (there are the most attractions at these parks.
