Best Disney Cruise Ship for Your Family (2026-2027 Disney Cruise Line Guide)

If you’re trying to decide which Disney cruise ship is best for your family, you’re definitely not alone. One of the most common questions I get from clients is: “Which Disney ship should we choose?”

And the answer is… it depends.

While all Disney Cruise Line ships offer incredible service, family entertainment, rotational dining, and Disney magic, each ship has a very different feel. Some are better for toddlers, some are ideal for Marvel fans, and others are perfect for longer, more relaxing vacations.

With newer ships like the Disney Treasure and Disney Destiny joining the fleet, choosing the right ship has become more important than ever.

This guide breaks down:

  • Disney Wish vs Disney Treasure vs Disney Destiny

  • The best Disney cruise ship for toddlers

  • Which Disney cruise ship is best for adults

  • The newest Disney cruise ship

  • And how to choose the right Disney cruise for your family.

Disney Wish vs Disney Treasure vs Disney Destiny: What’s the Difference?

One of the biggest misconceptions about Disney Cruise Line is that all the newer ships are basically the same. They’re not. The newer Wish-class ships each have their own distinct atmosphere and personality.

Tiana and Naveen on the Disney Wish

Disney Wish

The Disney Wish feels elegant, whimsical, and heavily princess-inspired. The Grand Hall has a fairytale castle atmosphere, and many of the experiences lean toward classic Disney storytelling. That said, some families are afraid the Wish is “too princessey” which is absolutely NOT the case. There are little princess touches (like Cinderella statue in the Grand Hall) but absolutely nothing that would turn me away if I only had children who don’t care about princesses!

The Wish is especially popular with:

  • first-time Disney cruisers

  • families with toddlers and preschoolers

  • guests wanting the newest technology and stateroom designs

Highlights include:

  • Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure

  • Worlds of Marvel interactive dining experience

  • Short Bahamas itineraries with Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay

The biggest downside? Because the Wish primarily sails shorter itineraries, it can feel busier and more high-energy than some of the older ships.

Disney Treasure

The Disney Treasure has a completely different vibe. Instead of fairytale elegance, the Treasure focuses on adventure, exploration, and immersive storytelling like:

  • Jungle Cruise

  • Aladdin

  • Adventureland

  • world travel-inspired design

The Treasure feels slightly more sophisticated and layered than the Wish, making it especially appealing to repeat Disney cruisers and families with elementary-aged kids.

Highlights include:

  • Plaza de Coco dining experience

  • Haunted Mansion Parlor

  • longer Caribbean itineraries

For many families, the Disney Treasure strikes a nice balance between kid-focused fun and a more elevated overall atmosphere.

The Grand Hall on the Disney Destiny

Disney Destiny

The Disney Destiny is Disney Cruise Line’s newest North American-based ship and launched in late 2025 (read more here for my full review of the Destiny). The Destiny has a different atmosphere centered around heroes and villains, with strong Marvel influences throughout the ship.

Theming includes:

  • Black Panther-inspired Grand Hall

  • Hercules stage show

  • Lion King dining experience

  • unique villain meet-and-greets

  • superhero storytelling elements

The Disney Destiny is likely to be especially popular with:

  • Marvel fans

  • families wanting the newest Disney cruise ship

  • repeat Disney cruisers looking for something different

If your family loves immersive theming and cinematic Disney storytelling, the Destiny may quickly become your favorite ship.

Which Disney Cruise Ship Is Best for First-Time Cruisers?

For most first-time Disney cruisers, I typically recommend either the Disney Wish or Disney Dream.

The Wish feels especially exciting for first-time guests because:

  • everything feels new

  • the theming is incredibly immersive

  • the staterooms are thoughtfully designed for families

  • there are lots of wow-factor moments

The Dream is another excellent option for families wanting a shorter cruise, and tends to be less expensive than the Wish

If you’re nervous about cruising in general, shorter itineraries on the Dream or Wish can be a great way to test whether your family enjoys cruising before committing to a 7-night sailing.

Which Disney Cruise Ship is best for Families with Toddlers?

This is one of the most important decisions for families with young kids because some ships simply function better for toddlers.

For most families with toddlers, the Disney Wish is probably the best Disney cruise ship.

Why?

  • excellent splash areas for little ones

  • updated nursery spaces

  • highly functional stateroom layouts

  • shorter sailing lengths

  • lots of character interactions

One thing many parents don’t realize is that Disney cruises can actually feel significantly less exhausting than Disney World with toddlers. You unpack once, dinner rotates with you, and entertainment is centralized.

Black Panther on the Disney Destiny

Which Disney Cruise Ship Is Best for Marvel Fans?

Right now, the Disney Destiny is shaping up to be the best Disney cruise ship for Marvel fans.

The Destiny’s hero-and-villain atmosphere feels much more immersive than previous ships, and Marvel storytelling is integrated throughout the ship’s overall design.

That said:

  • the Disney Wish and Treasure both have Marvel-themed dining

  • Disney Cruise Line does offer some Marvel Day at Sea sailings (current being offered in early 2007 on the Magic sailing out of Galveston).

If the dates don’t work for one of the Marvel Day at Sea sailings, and if Marvel is the primary reason your family is booking Disney Cruise Line, the Destiny will likely be the strongest fit.

Older Disney Ships vs Newer Disney Ships

One of the biggest surprises for first-time cruisers is that many experienced Disney Cruise Line fans still prefer the older ships.

The newer ships:

  • feel more technologically advanced

  • have more immersive theming

  • include larger kids spaces

  • offer more “wow factor”

But the classic ships often feel:

  • less crowded

  • easier to navigate

  • more relaxing

  • more balanced overall

This is especially important if your family prefers a calmer vacation atmosphere.

The “best” ship often comes down less to age and more to your travel style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Disney cruise ship is newest?

The Disney Adventure is the newest ship and sails out of Singapore. Otherwise, the Disney Destiny is currently Disney Cruise Line’s newest active ship currently sailing out of Florida.

Is Disney Destiny better than the Wish?

Not necessarily, but they simply appeal to different families. The Wish feels more fairytale-inspired, while the Destiny has a more dramatic heroes-and-villains atmosphere that may appeal more to Marvel fans. The Wish currently sails out of Port Canaveral, which makes it a perfect pair with a Walt Disney World vacation. My family strongly prefers sailing out of Port Canaveral because it makes the vacation feel more exciting to start off at a Disney resort (even if we don’t visit the parks!). The Destiny sails out of Ft. Lauderdale.

Which Disney ship is best for toddlers?

For most families, the Disney Wish is the best Disney cruise ship for toddlers because of its updated splash areas, nursery spaces, family stateroom layouts, and shorter itineraries.

The Grand Hall on the Disney Magic

Which Disney ship is least crowded?

Many guests feel the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder feel less crowded because they’re smaller ships with a more relaxed atmosphere.

Are the older Disney ships outdated?

Not at all. While they don’t have some of the newest immersive theming elements, many experienced cruisers actually prefer the classic ships because they feel easier to navigate and less hectic.

Is the Disney Treasure worth it?

For many families, yes. The Treasure combines immersive theming with longer itineraries and a slightly more sophisticated atmosphere than the Wish.

Final Thoughts

There truly isn’t one universally “best” Disney cruise ship. The right choice depends on your family’s priorities, your kids’ ages, your preferred itinerary, and the kind of vacation experience you want.

Some families want nonstop entertainment and immersive storytelling. Others want slower mornings, relaxing sea days, and a quieter atmosphere.

The good news? There’s truly not a bad ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.
